Implantable Contact Lenses in Birmingham

What are Implantable Contact Lenses?

Imagine waking up and seeing clearly without reaching for glasses. Enjoying sports, travel, and daily life without fogging lenses or dryness from contacts. Implantable contact lenses (ICL) offer a modern, safe, and highly effective alternative to laser eye surgery and refractive lens exchange surgery, especially for those with high prescriptions, thin corneas, or dry eyes. They provide crisp, stable vision while preserving the natural structure of the eye. They are an attractive option for those seeking long‑term visual clarity without glasses or contact lenses. The ICL is an advanced technology that opens the door to a brighter, clearer future.

ICL are advanced, surgically implanted lenses are designed to correct a wide range of refractive errors, including myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. They avoid the risk of retinal detachment after refractive lens exchange and the glare of corneal laser procedures because they work with the eye’s natural anatomy. Here, the lens is placed gently behind the iris and in front of your natural lens, where it enhances your focusing power without removing any tissue. Intraocular contact lenses are an excellent option for those unsuitable for refractive lens exchange, LASIK or LASEK due to high myopia, thin corneas, keratoconus or dry eye conditions. The operation is easily reversed at any stage, for any reason, by simply taking the ICL out of the eye.

Why Choose to have an Intraocular Contact Lens at Edgbaston Eye Consultants?

Expert Consultants

Our ICL consultant team is led by Mr Ilango, the Chang humanitarian services award-winning ICL surgeon and recognised as one of the most experienced ICL surgeons in the UK. Ms Li Jiang and Prof Irfan Jeeva are both highly trained and experienced in managing ICL patients and work with Mr Ilango to get great results with the lenses. The ICL team will give you a comprehensive preoperative assessment and provide clear, honest communication regarding risks and suitability. They also provide thorough postoperative care with regular checks of your eyes after surgery.

Exceptional Visual Clarity

The ICL provides sharp, high‑definition vision by correcting even high levels of refractive error. The wide diopter range and astigmatism correction means that many patients who previously had no surgical options can now enjoy clear, stable vision.

Ideal for Patients Unsuitable for Other Forms of Surgery

Many people are disappointed to learn they cannot undergo refractive lens exchange or laser eye surgery due to thin corneas, high prescriptions, or dry eyes. The ICL bypasses these limitations entirely. Because the cornea and the lens remains untouched, the procedure is suitable for a much broader group of patients.

Reversible and Tissue-Preserving

One of the most reassuring aspects of the ICL is its reversibility. If your prescription or lens changes significantly later in life, or if you simply wish to explore other visual options, the lens can be removed or exchanged. This flexibility gives patients confidence and peace of mind.

A Solution for Presbyopia

For patients struggling with reading glasses, the ICL is available in presbyopic models that restore near vision while maintaining clarity at distance. This makes it a versatile option for adults seeking freedom from multifocal spectacles.

Mr Masood was excellent as was Mr Williams during my initial consultation. Both were clear about treatment options, potential risks and expected outcomes. Surgery was stress free as any worries or concerns were cleared prior to surgery. Everyone did their utmost to ensure that you felt comfortable throughout the whole process.

Really pleased with the outcome of my procedure. and the attention and work of Professor Scott. I will always recommend him. He is a brilliant man and very caring.

Prof. Scott explained the injury and that it was worse than first thought. At this present time this has left me partially sighted in my right eye. Unsure as to what the future outcome will be. Professional and courteous at all times. Hospital facilities superb.

This was no nowhere near as traumatic an experience as I was expecting. Everyone who looked after me was exceedingly kind and considerate. I would like to say a special word of thanks to reception, especially Hawa. People arrive for eye surgery very apprehensive and nervous. The staff in Reception are cheerful, reassuring, helpful and kind.

I am thrilled with the treatment carried out on my eye by Rob and his team - just not happy fully with the outcome as not what I expected but that is in no way reflective of treatment received here.

What Patients Can Expect

The operation is quick, typically taking around 15–20 minutes per eye and is performed as an ambulatory day-case procedure under local or sedated anaesthesia. Most patients notice improved vision almost immediately, with full clarity developing over the following days. Because the cornea is not reshaped, recovery is generally smooth and comfortable. Many patients return to normal activities within 24 – 48 hours. After ICL surgery all patients are offered a yearly check-up to make sure their eyes are optimally corrected.
