Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an advanced treatment for dry eye disease caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. At Edgbaston Eye Consultants, our specialists use gentle, targeted IPL therapy to reduce inflammation, improve tear quality, and relieve symptoms, providing personalised, consultant‑led care for long‑term dry eye relief.

Causes

Dry eye is a result of a number of different factors that disrupt the normal structure and function of tears and the tissues that make up the surface of the eye. It is usually related to increased evaporation of the tears from disruption of the oil film produced by the meibomian glands. Nowadays this is typically a lifestyle related condition from prolonged use of smartphones and computers in an air-conditioned environment, made worse by smoking and contact lens use. It can be due to reduced tear production through a different mechanism that is commonly associated with rheumatoid arthritis and use of certain medications. Hormonal changes associated with age also causes dry eye and it is common around the menopause.

Symptoms

The symptoms of dry eye are distressing, patients often suffer for years until they access appropriate treatment. Physical discomfort with grittiness, stinging, burning, and a feeling of “something in the eye” is often experienced. Dry eye commonly causes blurred vision due to disruption of the ocular surface, and the underlying inflammation can trigger a reflex flow of tears, causing watery eyes despite the dry eyes. The eyes and eyelid margins are typically red and inflamed which is often unsightly.

Treatments

Self Care

We promote the use of eyelid cleansing wipes to treat blepharitis and warming eye masks to improve Meibomian gland function. We advise use of a humidifier in dry environments and adequate hydration. Wraparound sunglasses help in dusty dry environments. If using a computer, you should look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes (the 20:20:20 rule) and position any screens slightly below eye level. Ocular lubricants will often help in dry eye, we recommend preservative free drops that are tailored to your eyes.

Dry Eye Cleansing Wipes

Wipes remove bacteria, oil and crusts that build up around the eyes and lead to inflamed meibomian glands

Warming Eye Masks

These masks apply gentle heat that unblocks the Meibomian Glands and supports their function.

Ocular Lubricants

Lubricants apply instant moisture to support the tear film to form a protective barrier on the eye.

Mr Masood was excellent as was Mr Williams during my initial consultation. Both were clear about treatment options, potential risks and expected outcomes. Surgery was stress free as any worries or concerns were cleared prior to surgery. Everyone did their utmost to ensure that you felt comfortable throughout the whole process.

Really pleased with the outcome of my procedure. and the attention and work of Professor Scott. I will always recommend him. He is a brilliant man and very caring.

Prof. Scott explained the injury and that it was worse than first thought. At this present time this has left me partially sighted in my right eye. Unsure as to what the future outcome will be. Professional and courteous at all times. Hospital facilities superb.

This was no nowhere near as traumatic an experience as I was expecting. Everyone who looked after me was exceedingly kind and considerate. I would like to say a special word of thanks to reception, especially Hawa. People arrive for eye surgery very apprehensive and nervous. The staff in Reception are cheerful, reassuring, helpful and kind.

I am thrilled with the treatment carried out on my eye by Rob and his team - just not happy fully with the outcome as not what I expected but that is in no way reflective of treatment received here.
