What is a Cataract?
The lens in your eye is normally clear and helps to focus the light entering your eye. It can become cloudy and cause your sight to become blurred, when we call it a ‘cataract’. A cataract is NOT a film or growth that occurs in the eye, it is clouding within the lens that sits just behind your iris, the coloured part of your eye.
Cataracts will usually affect both eyes but are often at different stages. Cataracts cannot be treated with medicines, eye drops or lasers. They are treated with surgery where the cloudy lens is removed and replaced by an artificial lens.
Around 300,000 cataract operations are performed in the UK each year, most of these leave the patient with distance vision and no reading vision. Edgbaston Eye Consultants has the range of lenses that will give you distance and reading vision according to your lifestyle.
What are the Symptoms?
- Decreased vision that can’t be corrected with glasses
- Faded or washed out colours appear, often with a yellow haze
- Light sensitivity, glare, and halos around lights especially in sunlight and when driving at night
- Frequent changing spectacle prescriptions, usually becoming more short-sighted

Mr Masood was excellent as was Mr Williams during my initial consultation. Both were clear about treatment options, potential risks and expected outcomes. Surgery was stress free as any worries or concerns were cleared prior to surgery. Everyone did their utmost to ensure that you felt comfortable throughout the whole process.

Really pleased with the outcome of my procedure. and the attention and work of Professor Scott. I will always recommend him. He is a brilliant man and very caring.
Prof. Scott explained the injury and that it was worse than first thought. At this present time this has left me partially sighted in my right eye. Unsure as to what the future outcome will be. Professional and courteous at all times. Hospital facilities superb.
This was no nowhere near as traumatic an experience as I was expecting. Everyone who looked after me was exceedingly kind and considerate. I would like to say a special word of thanks to reception, especially Hawa. People arrive for eye surgery very apprehensive and nervous. The staff in Reception are cheerful, reassuring, helpful and kind.
I am thrilled with the treatment carried out on my eye by Rob and his team - just not happy fully with the outcome as not what I expected but that is in no way reflective of treatment received here.
